I colori sono una di queste cose che cambia significato a seconda della cultura. Colors are one of these things that changes meaning depending on the culture.
Oggi voglio approfondire alcune espressioni italiane in cui usiamo i colori per comunicare uno stato d’animo o una situazione. Today I want to delve deeper into some Italian expressions in which we use colors to communicate a mood or a situation.

Avete mai notato che i colori esistono in tutto il mondo, ma che ogni cultura assegna a loro un significato diverso? Have you ever noticed that colors exist all over the world, but that each culture assigns them a different meaning?
Ad esempio, io ho notato che in alcuni paesi il rosso significa amore, in altri indica la morte. For example, I have noticed that in some countries red means love, in others it indicates death.
Ci sono alcuni popoli che utilizzano il bianco per indicare purezza e altri in cui il bianco significa debolezza. There are some peoples who use white to indicate purity and others where white signifies weakness.
Nell’episodio di oggi voglio condividere 15 espressioni italiane che usiamo nella vita di tutti i giorni per esprimere sentimenti o situazioni in cui ci troviamo tramite i colori. In today’s episode I want to share 15 Italian expressions that we use in everyday life to express feelings or situations we find ourselves in through colors.
Quindi iniziamo subito con la prima espressione, vedere tutto rosa. So let’s start right away with the first expression, seeing everything pink.
Ed è un’espressione che si riferisce a un atteggiamento positivo e ottimista. And it is an expression that refers to a positive and optimistic attitude.
Ad esempio, se un tuo amico è sempre positivo nonostante le difficoltà, puoi dire non importa cosa succeda, Paolo vede sempre tutto rosa. For example, if a friend of yours is always positive despite difficulties, you can say no matter what happens, Paolo always sees everything as rosy.
Oppure se tua sorella guarda sempre al lato positivo delle cose, puoi dire non so come fa ma riesce sempre a vedere tutto rosa. Or if your sister always looks on the bright side of things, you can say I don’t know how she does it but she always manages to see everything as rosy.
Essere nero ed è una frase che indica uno stato di rabbia e di preoccupazione. Being black is a phrase that indicates a state of anger and concern.
Ad esempio, se tuo fratello è molto arrabbiato dopo aver perso una partita a calcio, puoi dire dopo aver perso la partita Francesco è diventato nero. For example, if your brother is very angry after losing a football match, you can say after losing the match Francesco turned black.
Oppure se tua madre è molto preoccupata per il tuo ritardo potrebbe dire quando non sei arrivato in orario sono diventata nera. Or if your mother is very worried about your lateness she might say when you didn’t arrive on time I went black.
Il nero viene usato anche in un altro modo, vedere tutto nero ed è un’espressione che viene usata per esprimere un atteggiamento pessimista. Black is also used in another way, seeing everything black and is an expression that is used to express a pessimistic attitude.
Per esempio, se il tuo amico è sempre negativo puoi dire non importa quanto cerchiamo di rassicurarlo, Marco vede sempre tutto nero. For example, if your friend is always negative you can say no matter how much we try to reassure him, Marco always sees everything as black.

Mentre cambiando colore, essere bianco come un lenzuolo. While changing color, be white as a sheet.
Voi sapete il lenzuolo è quel telo che si usa per coprire il letto, per coprirsi a letto. You know the sheet is that cloth that is used to cover the bed, to cover oneself in bed.
Ed è un’espressione che si usa per indicare una persona molto spaventata o sotto shock. And it is an expression used to indicate a person who is very scared or in shock.
Ad esempio, se tuo fratello è rimasto spaventato dopo aver visto un film dell’orrore puoi dire dopo aver visto quel film mio fratello era bianco come un lenzuolo. For example, if your brother was scared after watching a horror movie you can say after watching that movie my brother was as white as a sheet.
Oppure se tua mamma è stata spaventata da un rumore improvviso potrebbe dire quando ho sentito quel rumore sono diventata bianca come un lenzuolo. Or if your mom was scared by a sudden noise she might say when I heard that noise I turned white as a sheet.
Ma il bianco viene usato anche in altri modi di dire. But white is also used in other ways of speaking.
Ad esempio avere carta bianca, cioè avere piena libertà di agire secondo le proprie decisioni. For example, having carte blanche, that is, having full freedom to act according to one’s decisions.
Una situazione tipica è quando il tuo capo ti dà pieno controllo su un progetto. A typical situation is when your boss gives you full control over a project.
Puoi dire il mio capo mi ha dato carta bianca sul progetto, cioè ti lascia libero di fare come vuoi, come decidi. You can say my boss gave me carte blanche on the project, that is, he leaves you free to do as you want, as you decide.
Oppure se i tuoi genitori ti lasciano libero di decidere dove andare in vacanza potrebbero dire quest’anno abbiamo deciso di darti carta bianca sulla scelta della destinazione delle vacanze. Or if your parents leave you free to decide where to go on holiday, they might say this year we have decided to give you carte blanche on choosing your holiday destination.
Prossima espressione con il bianco, passare una notte in bianco. Next expression with white, spend a sleepless night.
E si usa a questo modo, questo modo di dire quando non si riesce a dormire tutta la notte. And it’s used like this, this way of saying when you can’t sleep all night.
Spesso ma non sempre a causa dell’ansia o dell’agitazione. Often but not always due to anxiety or agitation.

Ultima espressione con il bianco, essere una mosca bianca. Last expression with white, being a white fly.
E ovviamente si riferisce all’unicità di qualcosa, a qualcosa di raro, perché le mosche sono nere. And obviously it refers to the uniqueness of something, to something rare, because flies are black.
Se ci fosse una mosca bianca sarebbe una cosa molto rara. If there was a whitefly it would be very rare.
Ad esempio se un tuo amico è molto bravo a disegnare puoi dire con il tuo talento nel disegno Roberto sei davvero una mosca bianca. For example, if a friend of yours is very good at drawing, you can say that with your talent in drawing, Roberto, you are truly a steal.
Oppure se hai un talento unico nella musica puoi dire mi dicono sempre che sono una mosca bianca con le mie abilità al pianoforte. Or if you have a unique talent in music you can say I’m always told that I’m a steal with my piano skills.
Cambiamo colore essere giallo ed è un’espressione che viene usata per indicare una persona che ha paura o è codarda oppure solamente molto spaventata. Let’s change color to be yellow and it is an expression that is used to indicate a person who is afraid or cowardly or just very scared.
Ad esempio se un tuo amico ha paura di parlare in pubblico puoi dire quando si tratta di parlare in pubblico Giancarlo diventa giallo. For example, if a friend of yours is afraid of speaking in public you can say when it comes to speaking in public Giancarlo turns yellow.
Oppure se sei tu a sentirti impaurito di fronte a una sfida puoi dire devo ammettere che divento giallo quando penso di fare paracadutismo. Or if you’re the one who feels scared when faced with a challenge you can say I have to admit that I turn yellow when I think about skydiving.
Prossimo colore il rosso, essere rosso come un gambero e si usa questa espressione quando c’è qualcuno che arrossisce dall’imbarazzo. The next color is red, being red like a shrimp and this expression is used when there is someone who blushes from embarrassment.
Ad esempio se tuo fratello arrossisce quando gli fanno un complimento puoi dire ogni volta che gli fanno un complimento diventa rosso come un gambero. For example, if your brother blushes when someone compliments him, you can say that every time someone compliments him, he turns red like a shrimp.

Altra espressione è diventare rosso come un peperone ed è simile alla precedente e viene usata per indicare un forte imbarazzo che causa arrossamento. Cambiamo colore essere al verde ovvero non avere denaro, avere difficoltà finanziarie. Let’s change the color of being broke or having no money, having financial difficulties.
Ad esempio se un tuo amico non ha più soldi alla fine del mese puoi dire a fine mese Luca è sempre al verde. For example, if a friend of yours has no money left at the end of the month you can say at the end of the month Luca is always broke.
Oppure se sei tu a finire i soldi prima di ricevere il prossimo stipendio puoi dire devo ammettere che ogni fine mese sono sempre al verde. Or if you are the one who runs out of money before receiving your next paycheck you can say I have to admit that I am always broke every end of the month.
Ma il verde viene usato anche per esprimere invidia. But green is also used to express envy.
Ad esempio se tua sorella è molto invidiosa della tua nuova borsa puoi dire quando ha visto la mia nuova borsa è diventata verde di invidia. For example if your sister is very envious of your new bag you can say when she saw my new bag she turned green with envy.
Oppure se sei tu a essere invidioso di un suo amico puoi dire quando ho sentito del suo nuovo lavoro sono diventato verde di invidia. Or if you are the one who is envious of his friend you can say when I heard about his new job I went green with envy.
Ma il verde è usato anche per sentimenti positivi o per situazioni positive. But green is also used for positive feelings or positive situations.
Ad esempio diciamo che qualcuno ha il pollice verde, il pollice è il dito della mano, per dire che ha molte abilità nel giardinaggio o nella cura delle piante. For example, let’s say someone has a green thumb, the thumb is the finger, meaning they have a lot of skills in gardening or taking care of plants.
Ad esempio se tuo zio ha un giardino bellissimo puoi dire mio zio ha decisamente il pollice verde. For example, if your uncle has a beautiful garden you can say my uncle definitely has a green thumb.
Il suo giardino è sempre perfetto. His garden is always perfect.
Oppure se sei tu quello bravo a far crescere le piante puoi dire mi dicono sempre che ho il pollice verde, amo curare le mie piante. Or if you’re the one who’s good at growing plants you can say they always tell me I have a green thumb, I love taking care of my plants.
E ultima espressione, avere un cuore d’oro. And last expression, have a heart of gold.
È un’espressione che usiamo per descrivere una persona estremamente gentile, generosa e affabile. It is an expression we use to describe an extremely kind, generous and affable person.
Ad esempio se tua nonna è sempre pronta ad aiutare gli altri puoi dire nonna ha un cuore d’oro, è sempre pronta ad aiutare. For example, if your grandmother is always ready to help others you can say grandmother has a heart of gold, she is always ready to help.
Oppure se sei tu a sentirti molto generoso, molto pronto aiutare gli altri puoi dire cerco sempre di aiutare quando posso, mi dicono che ho un cuore d’oro. Or if you are the one who feels very generous, very ready to help others you can say I always try to help when I can, they tell me I have a heart of gold.
